We are Forest, London’s most sustainable shared eBike operator. We bridge the gap between affordability and sustainability, using our advertising revenue to offer all users 10 minutes free cycling daily.

We are looking for a Head of Engineering to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will lead and manage a talented team of engineers to play a pivotal role in driving the technical direction of our applications and bringing our product visions to life. Please note: our company is based in the UK and has Chilean Founders.
*This role is based in Chile and reports to the team in Chile and the UK. Spanish and English fluency is mandatory.

Job Description

In your role as Engineering Manager, you will be primarily overseeing two major projects:

  1. ForestFleet: A comprehensive web application devised to manage our extensive eBike fleet. You'll be responsible for ensuring its continual optimization, integrating new features, and liaising with the operations team to address and anticipate their needs.
  2. Forest Mobile App: The primary touchpoint for our users. This application needs to be user-friendly, robust, and continually evolving. It should facilitate easy bike booking, route planning, and provide users with updates and offers.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and Shaping: Provide leadership to our Mobility Engineering Team, ensuring seamless experiences for our eBike users across both platforms.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage with the Product, Marketing, and Business teams, understanding and translating their needs into actionable tech solutions.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Occasionally, you might need to interface with our advertising partners to assimilate their technical requisites or feedback.
  • Team Dynamics: Guide a multidisciplinary team comprising front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, and QA testers.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or IT (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of experience in managing engineering teams
  • 7+ years of experience as a Full Stack Engineer or similar role
  • Proficiency in Go and Python programming language
  • Proficiency in SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Strong knowledge of API design principles, versioning, and best practices
  • Sharp analytical and problem-solving skills, being a team player and solution-oriented
  • Fluent in English to communicate effectively with the UK team

Preferred skills

  • Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience deploying applications on GCP, and familiarity with other platforms (Vercel, Railway, Render, Fly.io)
  • Strong understanding of Git and GitHub for version control and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies and frameworks (React/NextJS)
  • Familiarity with messaging and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with Terraform for infrastructure management
  • Familiarity with Auth0 and JSON Web Tokens for authentication and authorization
  • Knowledge of backend architecture and mobile products
  • Experience with startups or a deep understanding of the challenges and rewards within this unique environment
  • Direct mobility or transportation experience is a plus
