Key Responsibilities

Lead the development and innovation of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms for advanced pet care applications, specifically targeting prey detection and smart animal identification.
Drive the entire machine learning lifecycle including data pipeline creation, data collection strategy design, model training, deployment, and ongoing monitoring to ensure continuous improvement in real-world settings.
Optimize deep learning computer vision models to operate efficiently on resource-constrained embedded devices, focusing on balancing accuracy with computational complexity and energy consumption.
Prototype new AI-driven features for future pet care experiences and ensure seamless integration of robust solutions into the existing catflap embedded product.
Collaborate with AI research institutes and external partners to foster joint research initiatives and forward-looking advancements in computer vision technologies.
Develop and maintain well-documented, high-quality, and maintainable source code following embedded systems coding standards to support the scalability of the engineering team.
Work closely with data engineering and software engineering teams to integrate computer vision components within the larger product ecosystem.
Represent Flappie’s AI expertise in technical discussions with partners, clients, and at industry conferences, while contributing to the company’s intellectual property portfolio through innovative AI technology.

Required Skills and Experience

Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline with a strong focus on Computer Vision and Machine Learning methodologies.
Expert proficiency in Python programming, including experience optimizing code for embedded systems with constrained resources.
Deep theoretical and practical understanding of computer vision fundamentals such as image processing, feature extraction, object detection, vision transformers, and tracking algorithms.
Extensive hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow, with a proven track record of implementing and deploying state-of-the-art neural network architectures.
Demonstrated expertise in optimizing machine learning models for deployment on edge devices, including application of model compression techniques and efficient inference algorithms.
Strong background in developing and managing scalable data pipelines, with familiarity in big data technologies for processing large-scale image and video datasets.
Experience working with embedded Linux platforms and deploying machine learning models on embedded edge devices.
Sound software engineering practices including version control systems (e.g., Git), continuous integration workflows, and test-driven development approaches.
Proven leadership skills in managing technical projects end-to-end: planning, resource allocation, scheduling, and delivering production-ready solutions.
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a passion for innovation and crafting novel solutions for advanced computer vision challenges.
Excellent communication skills enabling clear explanation of complex technical topics to both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders alike.

Desirable Skills and Experience

Experience with embedded system software development beyond machine learning, including real-time operating systems and hardware-software co-design, would be beneficial. Knowledge of other programming languages such as C/C++ for embedded applications is an asset. A background in collaborative research projects or contributions to academic publications related to AI and computer vision enhances suitability. Familiarity with cloud-based AI services or tools for model deployment and monitoring could complement this role, as would experience in patent filing and intellectual property management.
